A First-Timer’s Adventure in Amsterdam: Discovering the City on Two Wheels with Mr. Squeeze

1.7K

When it comes to exploring new destinations, Amsterdam never disappoints.

Amsterdam is a city unlike any other. The capital of the Netherlands boasts a unique culture, with plenty to see and do. Many have heard of the city’s infamous Red Light District and relaxed laws on recreational drug use. However, there is so much more to Amsterdam. What makes the city truly stand out is that its transportation is on two wheels, with bicycles dominating the streets and canals. As a traveler and a foodie, I was immediately drawn to Amsterdam’s culture, and couldn’t wait to explore it for myself.

My first day in Amsterdam was overwhelming, to say the least. As someone who hails from a big city, I thought I was prepared to navigate another bustling metropolis. However, Amsterdam is unique in that bicycles take precedence over cars, and walking in bike lanes is not only frowned upon but also potentially dangerous. I quickly learned that the best way to explore the city was by renting a bike. After a few wobbly moments, I found my footing and began to appreciate the beauty of the city’s bike culture. Everywhere I turned, there were cyclists of all ages and backgrounds, whizzing past me without a care in the world.

One of the highlights of my trip was wandering the enchanting canals. Amsterdam is often referred to as the “Venice of the North,” due to its many waterways. Hop on a boat tour or, for the more adventurous, rent a paddle boat and explore the city at your own pace. I loved seeing the famous “Skinny Bridge” over the Amstel River, and the many houseboats that line the canals, giving the city its character.

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a visit to the Red Light District. The area is known for its sex shops, prostitution, and coffee shops that sell marijuana. While it may not be for everyone, it was a fascinating experience to see up close. The narrow streets and neon lights make for a surreal atmosphere. However, it’s important to respect those who live and work in the area and to be mindful of taking photos or being disruptive.

Amsterdam’s laid-back culture is what sets it apart from other cities. The Dutch are friendly, welcoming, and love to enjoy life. A visit to one of the city’s many outdoor markets is a perfect opportunity to see locals going about their daily lives. From the Albert Cuyp Market to the historic Bloemenmarkt, there is no shortage of fresh food, flowers, and souvenirs to be found. Make sure to try some traditional Dutch stroopwafels, or Syrup Waffles, which are two thin waffles stuck together with a layer of syrup in between.

My trip to Amsterdam was a truly unforgettable experience. From the city’s stunning canals to its bicycle culture and laid-back way of life, Amsterdam has so much to offer. While the city is perhaps best known for its Red Light District and relaxed laws on marijuana, there is so much more to discover. The food, the history, and the people all make Amsterdam a must-visit destination. I can’t wait to go back and explore even more of this vibrant and unique city.
